Shine is Off the Apple

It seems like Cupertino isn’t immune to buggy systems.  As I hinted in earlier posts, my upgrade to iPhone 2.0 and MobileMe has been a bit rocky to say the least.  To sum up, I’ve had to completely restore my new 3G iPhone (a two-hour process) because it wouldn’t boot and I haven’t seen my me.com e-mail for three days.

I restored my iPhone two days ago because I found it in a completely “hung” state while connected to my Mac for a sync.  It, in turn, hung iTunes and I couldn’t shut it down either.  The iPhone responded to holding both the “Power” and “Home” buttons simultaneously for a few seconds but wouldn’t reboot after that.  I tried three or four times, but the device wouldn’t get past the little silver Apple logo.  Completely useless.  Finally, I held the same button combination for quite a bit longer and the phone went into recovery mode.  I did a full restore from backup and the iPhone has worked ever since (PHEW!).  I am a little apprehensive now whenever I need to sync the thing, but so far, so good.

MobileMe has been a complete bust from my perspective.  When Apple made the original switchover [on or about July 10] I couldn’t get to any of the new web applications for three or four days.  All the services however, did still work.  I could fetch and send my .mac e-mail, sync my address books and calendar and access my iDisk files without problem.  As I mentioned earlier, my e-mail has now completely disappeared for over 72 hours and Apple is sticking by their story that about 1% of .me e-mail users are affected. I say bulls%#t!  One look at the overrunning support forums and it is blatantly obvious that more than 1% of e-mail users are in the dark.  It takes over 30 minutes just to connect with an on-line chat support person only to get the “1%” company line regurgitated.

All those smart-assed “I’m a Mac” commercials look pretty silly now.  Apple is just now learning to deal with problems of scale and not quickly enough in my opinion.  If they truly want to compete with Microsoft and Blackberry for a piece of the enterprise pie, they’re going to need to do better than this.  Oh well, I can still be reached, my Windows Live Mail is working!
